GMC has been entrusted with the responsibility of providing street lights in all the lanes and bye-lanes covering the entire city of Guwahati.

The scope of the project was to provide energy-efficient street lighting system with comprehensive operation and maintenance for seven years. The citizens' contribution had been kept minimal at Rs.100 towards application processing fee and the responsibility of bearing the energy charges of their respective street light which has been calculated approximately to be Rs. 25 to Rs. 30 per month. It was estimated that 10,000 street lights can be installed in the first phase with the earmarked amount. For the distribution of street lights, demand based approach was taken after detailed discussion.
